Restaurant M

restaurant_m restaurant_m2

This is Restaurant M. It’s a special restaurant in Tokyo that will be open for only one day. On that one day, you can get fairly standard food from the McDonald’s menu. But it will be offered to you fine china, ornate silverware, and bleached linens. The table service will, of course, be far superior from that which you can find at your local burger joint. You can see more photos at Kotaku. Unfortunately, it’s unclear what toy comes with the Happy Meal.

Pizza Hut Launches Box That Turns Into A Projector

The box, once emptied of its delicious content, lets you place your smartphone inside, at the ideal distance from an included lens. This lens comes attached to the plastic device that prevents the box from getting crushed in transit. The plastic device itself doubles as the phone stand. So all you have to do is poke the precut hole in the front, fit the lens, prop your phone up inside, and aim at your screen (which could simply be your wall!). There’s a code on the side for customers to scan and unlock viewable content, should there be nothing interesting on their devices.

The Blockbuster Box is the work of Ad agency Ogilvy & Mather Group HK and their Chief Creative Officer Reed Collins, and comes in four styles: “from the horror themed Slice Night, sci-fi spectacle Anchovy Armageddon, bizarrely romantic Hot and Ready, and the thrilling Fully Loaded.” It’s Hong Kong only at the moment, but we suspect this may become popular enough to spread worldwide.

History of the Conversation Heart

Conversation Hearts

Valentine’s Day means chalky candy hearts with a lot to say. But what’s behind these very loud little candies?

The story of conversation hearts began in 1847, when a Boston pharmacist named Oliver Chase longed for a way to get in on the apothecary lozenge craze. Lozenges were quickly gaining steam as the medicine conveyance of choice, and were also popular remedies for sore throats and bad breath. But making lozenges was complicated and time-consuming—the process involved a mortar and pestle, kneading dough, rolling it out, and cutting it into discs that would eventually become lozenges.

There had to be a better way, and Oliver came up with it. Inspired by the new wave of gadgets and tools that hit America as it industrialized, he invented a machine that rolled lozenge dough and pressed wafers into perfect discs. Oliver had inadvertently created America’s first candy-making machine, and before long, he had abandoned his pharmacy business to crank out miles of what would become New England Confectionery Company (NECCO) wafers.

Legend has it that Oliver’s NECCO wafers were carried by Civil War soldiers, and some speculate that the tradition of sending loving greetings to the troops morphed into the conversation heart, but those claims are hard to verify. What is clear is that as Oliver built his candy empire, his brother Daniel decided he wanted a piece of the action.

Inspired by the growing market for Valentine’s cards (which were popularized in the United States by Esther Howland, also a resident of Boston at the time), Daniel wondered if it would be possible to print sentimental messages on candy. In 1866, he figured out a way to print words on candy with vegetable dye during the cutting process.

People loved conversation candies (they weren’t available in heart shapes until 1902) and their witty messages, which could stoke the flames of love or warn off flaky suitors. Daniel’s candies were bigger than today’s version and had phrases like “MARRIED IN WHITE YOU HAVE CHOSEN RIGHT” and “HOW LONG SHALL I HAVE TO WAIT? PLEASE BE CONSIDERATE” emblazoned on a pastel, scalloped wafer.

Undisputable Cuz

Perfect for cooking four tons of meat at a time

A BBQ pit about the size of a whale — and almost large enough to cook one — is on sale for the equally hefty price of $350,000.

Terry Folsom, a man in Brenham, Tex. who says he acquired the 40-ton behemoth in a business transaction, is now looking to sell it, the Houston news source KHOU-TV reports. The pit is listed on Ebay with a sell price of $350,000.

“It’s the world’s largest barbecue pit,” Folsom’s wife Kim told KHOU-TV.

Undisputable Cuz

The pit, dubbed the “Undisputable Cuz,” stretches 75 feet and is large enough to cook four tons of meat at a time. Seven smokestacks extend from the top and 24 doors open into it. Of course, the pit is also equipped with a walk-in cooler with room for beer kegs.
