69th Annual Gerry Rodeo

Gerry Rodeo

2013 Gerry Rodeo

69th Annual Rodeo July 31 – August 3, 2013

  • Wednesday thru Saturday Performances  8:00 P.M.
  • Saturday Afternoon Performance  2:00 P.M.
  • Our Famous Beef BBQ Dinners each evening  5:00-7:30 P.M.

The 69th annual Gerry Volunteer Fire Department’s PRCA rodeo promises to be bigger and better than ever as approximately 130 professional cowboys and cowgirls will compete for more than $35,000 in the seven competitive events of rodeo. Add to that an afternoon show on Saturday, the specialty acts of clown and barrel man Dusty Barrett and his Roman Riding Ponies, the return of Greg Simas, one of rodeo’s top announcers to direct the action in the arena, and more than 100 head of outstanding stock provided by Painted Pony Pro Rodeo and you’ll understand why this rodeo is now the longest consecutively running rodeo east of the Mississippi.

Adding to the Gerry Rodeo’s great reputation, the cowboys of the First Frontier Rodeo Circuit, made up of the original 13 Colonies, recently voted Gerry as their favorite rodeo out of the 45 rodeos held in the Circuit last year.

Man escapes grizzly attack with .25 cal pistol

This is a story of self-control and marksmanship by a man

with an “itsy bitsy shooter” facing a fierce predator.

Grizzly

25 cal. Beretta Jetfire

25 cal. Beretta Jetfire

Here’s his story:

While out hiking in Alberta Canada with my wife, we were surprised by a huge grizzly bear charging at us from out of nowhere.  She must have been protecting her cubs because she was extremely aggressive.  If I had not had my little 25 cal. Beretta Jetfire with me, I would not be here today!  Just one shot to my wife’s knee cap was all it took.  The bear got her and I was able to escape by just walking away at a brisk pace.  It’s one of the best pistols in my collection.

Navy dolphins make amazing discovery

They discovered a rare 19th-century device that is one of only two in existence.

The discovery itself is notable enough: Navy specialists found a rare torpedo off the San Diego coast, an 11-foot brass gem called the Howell that dates back 130 years or so and was one of the first torpedoes to propel itself.

Only 50 were made, and only one other one still exists. But what makes the story even better is that the Navy specialists who found it were trained dolphins, reports the Los Angeles Times.

“Dolphins naturally possess the most sophisticated sonar known to man,” explains a specialist at the Space and Naval Warfare Systems Center Pacific. “We’ve never found anything like this,” says the head of the Navy’s marine mammal program. “Never.”

Give credit to dolphins Ten and Spetz for finding the torpedo, stamped “USN No. 24,” and then directing human divers to the spot.

The torpedo, rendered inoperable by its long stay in the ocean, is now being cleaned and readied for display at the Naval History and Heritage Command in Washington.

“It was the first torpedo that could be released into the ocean and follow a track,” says another official at the warfare systems center, and that made it a state-of-the-art weapon in its day.
